Concerns over global warming, energy conservation, and social responsibility makes it increasingly important that your Data Centre partner shouldn't add unnecessarily to your carbon footprint. Regulating authorities around the world have committed to the reduction of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions by imposing strict regulations, affecting many fire suppression agents that are on the market today. This is why Knowledge implemented the latest Green technology cooling and fire suppression systems in the design of its new North Tyneside data centre.
Using a chilled water N+1 system, the data hall benefits from a free cool mode when the ambient external temperature falls below 16 degrees Celsius. This technology investment delivers a lower energy consumption rating, saving earth resources and delivering a major reduction in the sites carbon footprint by up to 50% against traditional mechanical air cooling systems. systems at both above and below floor levels.
A raft of state-of-the-art options maximise efficiency and control allowing the most optimum, flexible and energy efficient solution to be selected. SmartCool’s control logic, dual power and DualCool options within the case are designed to meet the N+1 and 2N redundancy requirements of critical data centre applications.
The free-cooling variant of DualCool uses 46% less energy than a standard air-cooled DX system. This equates to a reduction of 31,000kg of CO2 per year. Modular design and control logic allow easy expansion of the system when room load increases. Multiple units of different size and capacity can be looped together, with the potential for even greater savings in energy costs when linked with one or more Airedale free-cooling chillers.
Utilising the built in internal PCO web controller the Knowledge NOC is able to monitor a wide range of cooling characteristics such as supply and return water temperatures humidity free cooling.
Knowledge Data Centres use the latest Novec 1230 fire fighting system. Novec 1230 fluid discharges as a colourless electrically non-conductive and non-corrosive gas that does not damage sensitive equipment. There is no post discharge residue and no costly clean up operations are required ensuing down time is kept to the absolute minimum.
Novec 1230 fluid contains neither bromine nor chlorine and has zero ozone depleting potential. The atmospheric lifetime of Novec 1230 fluid is estimated to be in the range of 3-5 days and with a global warming potential of 1, it is considered that the Novec 1230 fluid has no measurable impact on climate change. These attributes ensure that Novec 1230 fluid represents a truly sustainable technology.
The non-conductive, non-corrosive and fast-evaporating fluid is commercially available globally and is suitable for use in occupied spaces. The fluid can be applied in streaming, flooding, inerting and explosion suppression applications in the following areas: data processing and control rooms, telecommunications, marine applications, oil and gas applications, and archives and museums. Novec 1230 fluid leaves no residue to clean up so systems can remain operational. Additionally, the fluid can be used with existing materials of construction.
The fluid, which is stored as a liquid, becomes a gas upon discharge and is therefore easier to handle and store. In addition, there is a distinct advantage in handling a low-vapor pressure liquid clean agent like Novec 1230 fluid - it can be shipped by air in bulk quantities. And, because it's a non-pressurized liquid, refilling after discharge is much simpler than filling from a bulk cylinder of a gas. This minimises the need to move system containers offsite. Systems charged with Novec 1230 fluid can be used in specialized streaming and conventional total flooding applications, localised flooding systems and directional spray type applications.
